The African Caribbean Community In The UK And Dementia: A High Risk But Under-researched Population

Abstract

Statement of the Problem: People in the UK of African-Caribbean origin are increasingly shown to be at greater risk of dementia than either the indigenous White UK population or any other UK minority ethnic group. However this general observation as yet fails to provide a full clinical description of this risk profile based on confirmed diagnosis and has failed to have much impact on recruitment of African-Caribbean subjects for dementia research studies. The few studies that have been done point to complex and possibly interactive contributory factors, some of which may be amenable to preventative measures.
